Fashion Rain Capes

Are Men's Capes Overdue for a Comeback?

Capes worn by men have been around for a long time and have been in and out of fashion every now and then. Are they due for a comeback any time soon? Will you invest in one?

The Victorian era saw a rise in the fashion conscious among both men and women and capes were worn as overcoats so as not to crumple the garment underneath.

Today capes are an important staple for many autumn winter fashion collections. From a more aesthetic point of view, a cape exudes elegance and gives the wearer a certain status. Dior took on the more casual approach showing something that might be worn in the military, while Dolce & Gabbana, Emporio Armani and Mugler made their Dandy more chic, with elegant drapery hanging over their tailored masterpieces.

Cape sales rise and fall according to fashion, but lately they have shown a strong upswing. Capes are actually making a comeback in the high fashion menswear world.

Men's capes seem to be having a moment now, if only among the more fashion-forward, but even those tend to be solid colors. Some men's capes are just rectangles with holes in center (think rain poncho), while the interesting ones are more shaped at the shoulders with rounded hems.

Women have always been able to wear capes in a normal setting. But if you’re a man it takes some courage, which will also bring respect. However, if you are super confident about wanting to try out a cape, the go for it! What's the worst that could happen?

Wear one or two layers of functional clothes beneath your rain cape or poncho, maybe with waterproof pants or gaiters, and you have the best all-around weather solution for most seasons. It's the perfect complement for every outfit.

Noble Capes

Noble people used to wear capes. In ancient times, elegant capes were worn as important styles of dress to indicate an individual’s rank. Members of the higher classes as well as scholars wore these clothes to represent their status.

These clothes were symbols used by the elite classes to alert lower classes of the presence of noble ranking individuals.

Nowadays, that social classes don’t exist anymore so it’s useless to wear capes in sign of the higher level of social class. Now very few people wear them because they come from a noble family and they have always worn them.

Capes look great both for formal wear and outdoor adventures. For more casual attire they are fun to wear as well. Capes are de rigueur at the opera. Express your individuality. Embrace the cape, as it embraces you. You can wear a cape, anytime, anywhere, and look awesome. On men it usually comes to mid calf, on youth it can be full length.

Typically the word 'cape' implies to a long, loose outer garment often with a hood. Capes and cloaks were a part of human clothes for thousands of years, serving both as clothing and blankets. Middle Age cloaks were the main outer clothing of the era, so they involve a multitude of materials and decoration. If you’re up for buying a classic cape, we'd recommend you learn about the basic models and styles, to ensure it fits your wardrobe.

Capes were more common for women while ponchos were more often worn by men. These days, no one really cares what you wear though. People can be eccentric. Like kilts, personal expression is the rule rather than social acceptance.

Modern Capes

The original rain cape is of equal length back and front, closed all round for a good protection, unlike a poncho. Most have arm openings on the front or side. Shorter fashion capes can replace an anorak or jacket. Medium sized capes should reach your knees. The full length capes provide optimal rain cover, but are hard to find in shops.
